Choosing the Best Trail Camera
If you're like most of my clients you know a little about trail cameras and the way they work, but the varied choices available are a little confusing, to say the least!
I use trail cameras all the time, and can help you to narrow down your options to make your choice of trail camera much easier. There are numerous manufacturers of trail cameras, but it's hard to decide on the right model for you. There are also many counterfeit cameras out there, as well as suppliers who'll tell you to send your camera back to China if it stops working.

My current favourite cameras for most things are the Brownings. Compare the different models to get the best field of view and capabilities to suit your needs. I am now supplying Bushnell cameras again and these will be added to the new website; let me know if you want one. I may also phase out the Acorn models, as they can't compete for image/video quality either, though check out the video quality below and if they're good enough for what you need, go for it!

This camera is great, well camouflaged and I've used it extensively in Poland and the UK.
I retrieved a couple of Acorn 5210A cameras from a forest in south east Poland in February 2014. They'd been there for 8 months, using just 8 internal alkaline batteries, and were still working!
One had nearly 700 images on it and the other had 3558 images, and had just taken a sequence of wild boar at a waterhole 8 minutes before I arrived! Terrific cameras.
I replaced the batteries and SD cards and left them there for another 7 months. When we went back in October they were still working and had some lovely shots of wolf, lynx, wild boar and deer.

This camera is very easy to use and produces good images and videos, though not nearly as good as the Browning cameras (the Mini 30 suffers from movement blur). And it's only 12.5 x 8 x 5.5 cm! Note that deployment times are not as good as other cameras, as it only holds four batteries (unless you use an external power supply). The screen is required for changing the settings, but if you have multiple cameras you'll only need one screen.

"Hi, For a few years I had been using a Little Acorn wildlife camera and was reasonably happy. When it died I replaced it with another top of the range Little Acorn. However I became concerned that I was missing action due to slow trigger speed. I researched the market and decided on the Browning Patriot. The difference is like moving up from a village football team to the Premier League. The response time for video is excellent, no more missed action. The quality of the video is outstanding, even at night. In all I am 99% happy with the Browning camera. My only negative is the limit of 30seconds on night time video. I would like to be able to set it longer.. --- Len"
Martin's reply: I find it's best to use a video limit of 10s, as the re-trigger time is very quick on Browning cameras and it saves wasting battery power.
Note that the Patriot has a 'squeak' on the videos, which some may find annoying, and the video quality isn't as good as the Elite HP4 or HP5 models so, apart from the wider field of view, the Elite HP4/HP5 models above are better value. I can supply the Patriot, but won't be keeping (m)any in stock.

I recommend the Eneloop Pro low self-discharge rechargeable batteries for the Acorn & Browning Elite HP4 cameras and these are the ones I supply with my Acorn & Browning Elite HP4/HP5 camera bundles.
The Spypoint, Bushnell and some Browning cameras are not recommended to be used with AA rechargeables, so if you want to use AA batteries, the Uniross alkaline or Energizer Lithium batteries below are recommended (or use the li-ion battery pack for Spypoint cameras).
Most Browning cameras will work with the Eneloop Pro batteries, but not for as long as with alkaline or Energizer Lithium! (the Browning Elite HP4/HP5 cameras work well with Eneloop Pro batteries)
Don't use Duracell or some other alkaline batteries as their high internal resistance makes them unsuitable for trail cameras.
If you would like to use an external power supply, you'll see a lead below for connecting an SLA battery to Acorn cameras, or contact me to ask about other options as I can supply mains power adaptors and also external li-ion battery packs.

SETUP INSTRUCTIONS FOR ACORN MGX CAMERAS, USING DISK PROVIDED
For non-MMS/non-SMTP cameras, just use figures 1 and 2

If you're using SMTP2GO, which we recommend, make sure that your SMTP2GO Username is the same as the first part of the sender email address (in this case 'wildlifeservices')
Click on the button for Camera Setup, set the settings, connect an SD card to your computer, select the SD card drive then select Generate. This will save the Camera Setup file on the SD card.
If you have an MMS/SMTP camera, click on Exit, then click on the MMS or SMTP button as appropriate (we recommend the SMTP method, but you'll need to set up your SMTP2GO account first, bearing in mind the 'rule' above about the Username). Set the settings as appropriate using Figure 3 or 4, then select the SD card drive as before, then select Generate. This will save the MMS or SMTP Setup file on the SD card. You should use the MMS setup OR the SMTP setup, NOT both.
When you have the setup files you require on the SD card, simply put the SD card into your camera and switch to Test. You should see the Update text flash briefly on the screen for each setup file on the card.
