Construction: Protection against Wind Uplift

The roof is characteristically an exposed place with little shelter against inclement weather. Whilst sedum plants are happy to live in these conditions, it is vital that the blanket they grow on is well anchored so that it won't be lifted, and subsequently damaged, by strong winds.

Wind damage caused by insufficient edge loading

We recommend that sedum blankets are anchored using either:

  • a 300mm wide strip of 20-40mm washed pebbles, or
  • concrete paving slabs or,
  • in the case of wooden buildings, a specially designed edging which overlaps the sedum matting by at least 100mm.

Whatever material you choose as wind uplift protection, the retaining strips should extend over the edge of the sedum blanket by at least 100mm.
