How much does a living roof made from Enviromat sedum matting weigh?

The saturated weight for what is termed a lightweight domestic green roof will be between 65Kg and 150Kg per square metre. This includes the weight of the root barrier, the drainage mat, the water retention matting and the sedum matting but not the roof deck or any live loading, click here for more details.

How can I tell if my building is strong enough to support an Enviromat roof?

If in doubt, consult an architect or structural engineer - especially if the green roof you're planning is on a building that requires insurance.

Where can I buy Enviromat and what sized pieces does it come in?

Enviromat comes four different sizes:

  • 25cm x 50cm (0.125 square metre)
  • 50cm x 50cm (0.25 square metre)
  • 100cm x 100cm (1 square metre)
  • 100cm x 200cm (2 square metres)

For green roofing we recommend that you order 100x100cm slabs - they're better value for money than smaller, tray-sized pieces but they're easier to handle than the 100x200cm rolls and far better for use on a sloping roof. Enviromat can be ordered online from us.

My roof doesn't match the standard roll sizes for Enviromat, are you able to supply different sizes to order?

To avoid wastage and to keep our prices as low as possible, the sizes above are the only ones we are able to supply. Enviromat is very easy to cut to size using a sharp knife (such as a stanley knife) or an angle grinder. Please make sure though that smaller-sized pieces of Enviromat go in the centre of the roof rather than at the edges because small pieces are more prone to drying out.

What sedum species are in Enviromat sedum matting? Is it possible to buy mats with just one species in?

Enviromat consists of a random mixture of low-growing sedum species which includes:

  • S. album
  • S. reflexum
  • S. sexangulare
  • S. spurium
  • S. kamtschaticum
  • S. pulchellum

Because this is a random seed mix (all the different seeds are mixed up and then broadcast) we cannot guarantee that every piece of Enviromat despatched will contain all of the species above. Enviromat is only available as a random mix of species - we cannot produce single-species mats - sorry!

I've heard that Enviromat Sedum Matting is very low maintenance - does it need any TLC at all?

Yes, a little. Enviromat is low maintenance but it isn't "no maintenance". If you are thinking of installing a living green roof using Enviromat sedum matting, you need to be prepared to go up on to the roof at least once a year to remove any debris that might suffocate the plants, clear drainage outlets and apply fertiliser. How often does Enviromat need watering?

The plants used to grow Enviromat sedum matting are all quite drought tolerant and provided that your green roof has been properly installed on to a gentle slope (less than 10 degrees) using water retention matting, then the plants should get enough water just from rainfall.

However, on a steeper slope or in very exposed conditions there is a chance that the growing medium will dry out very quickly and the plants will need extra water. Consider installing an irrigation system when you build your roof so that if the plants show signs of stress (leaves become wrinkled and take on a rubbery texture) and no rain is forecast, you can give them a really good soaking.
